The NAD Conference itself was amazing with the time I got to go to events and see SOME exhibits. I met amazing girls and deaf people from all over! I will always cherish my experience in New Orleans for the Miss Deaf America Pageant! I wish Michelle the best of luck as she continues her reign through 2010!

There is so much I can say about the experience that it just isn't worth putting down in words! You have to experience it yourself! To those of you who want to try for Miss Deaf (STATE) I encourage you to do so! It's a rewarding experience and opens many doors for you!

God Bless and I'm so sorry for a long time since my last update :-( It's been a hectic summer and hectic beginning of school year! I'm hoping to complete my last year (I'm a senior at GWU now) smoothly! I will not be updating as often now but hopefully after the 100th anniversary party for NCAD I will inform you of how it went! If you want to go check out www.ncadeaf.org for more information!

Semester draws to a close...

So i have to ask ya'll to forgive me...the last part of the semester was a whirlwind for me. I am offically done with my junior year of college and now a SENIOR!!! i've been crazy busy the last few weeks of school and i would take the time to say what i have been up to but i'm sure that you don't want to hear about my school work!

I have been busy preparing for surgery upcoming. I go into the hospital on may 13 and surgery is may 14. I pray that I will be fully recovered to go to NAD conference and National Pageant. I am excited for that opportunity but we have to wait and see how my recovery goes with the upcoming surgery on my brain. If you haven't heard yet...I have a Colliod Cyst in the third ventricle region of my brain and will be having surgery to remove it. I am scared because this is my first major surgery and stay in the hospital. I will be at Duke Hospital for surgery.

So as my surgery approaches and as I'm trying to pack up and head home for the summer I wanted to say I'll try and update when I can about my status! God Bless and thanks for supporting me through my reign as Miss Deaf North Carolina! I'm truly blessed to hold this title:)

God's Amazing Creation!

So this past weekend I was given the opportunity to go backpacking/camping with my Outdoor Education Class. We went to Grayson Highlands State Park and hiked the trails near there. Friday night we took some wrong turns and ended up way off course. We set up the tents and camped out there. Woke up to AMAZING view of the sun coming over the mountains! BREATHTAKING!!! ahhh:) its cold but i'm all cozy in my layers of clothes! we gear up and hike all day. we hiked some of the AT (applachian trail) and it was tough but the view on the top was well worth it. it started raining on us around 2pm and we were still 1 1/2 away from where we were gonna set up our campsite. we finally arrived at 3:30 and set up tents in the rain...all of us were soaked to the bone and it was cold so we had to take off wet clothes and get in our sleeping bags to dry off and get warm. it continued to rain all night and we ate cold dinner instead of a warm one like we planned. the next morning we woke up to snow and sleet and rain...it was FREEEZING! clothes that were wet the day before were now FROZEN, the tents were FROZEN and everything was damp/wet/frozen! we packed up and drank hot chocolate at the same time and hit the trails back to the vans. we ofc missed our turn for the shortcut so we ended up hiking a lot more than just a few miles...but we finally arrived at the vans, changed into some warm clothes, and hit the road...we stopped at the welcome center and used the REAL bathrooms (not the wilderness!) and saw a map of where we hiked...figured out it was about 20-24 miles all together! WOW! it was an awesome experience to see God's creation with nothing but yourself and the wilderness:) We saw some wild ponies on the trail and they were very friendly. thankfully we didn't run into any other wild animals! :-) I was so happy to be back home and in my warm apt and have my bed waiting for me:-) I would definately do it again but maybe not when the forecast is supposed to rain!!! haha!

PICTURES WILL COME SOON FOR BOTH HIKE/CAMP and MISSIONS TRIP:) I love you all!!!

Adventures Galore!

Hey Everyone!!!

I know I promised Pictures soon...i promise they will be posted eventually...most likely while I'm at home for Easter Break. So as you all know I had an amazing adventure when I went on my missions trip...if you haven't heard then here it goes:-)

We left Charlotte earllllly saturday March 1st. We had good flights and good timing with everything. Arrived in San Salvador and met with the Missionaries, Stan and Lynn, who live there. They were very sweet. We went to their house, about 1 hr away from the airport and then we went shopping. At this point I was very tired from a long day of traveling so I was ready for bed even though we hadnt had dinner yet! We go back to the missionaries house and they provide us a El Salvadorian Sign Class which Rudy and Regina led (they are local deaf). let me tell you now...learning two languages at one time is REALLLY hard!!! i can't believe i actually did it!!! then we were introduced to El Salvadorian pizza (which is delicious) and soda. I found my new favorite soda called Kolashanpan (its a sweet orange soda). then more sign class! wow i was on overload already!!! lol.

March 2nd- we got up, had breakfast, devotional, then we went to a local church to meet up with some local deaf. we all split up into small groups to do different things. Some went to deaf sunday school, some went to sign class, and some went to the hearing church and had an interpreter interpret the service. I went to the church. It was good experience. The interpreters used some ASL with a mix of El Salvadorian signs...that threw me off! haha. I enjoyed it though! After church we went to the big mall and ate lunch there before heading back to the missionaries house to pack up and leave for La Union. It was a 3 hr drive to La Union and included many funny stories of drunk cow and illegal animal sales etc. WOW! haha. But let me tell you...El Salvador is BEAUTIFUL! the land is amazing:) We arrive at the hotel and have team meetings and check in...its a beautiful hotel and good area! we were overlooking the bay/pacific ocean! could see honduras from our window! I'm excited about teaching the children this upcoming week!

March 3-7th: (March 3) FIRST DAY OF TEACHING!!!! only one of my girls showed up...oh well...it was a little difficult to keep her attention because she wanted to see what others were doing with us Americans! On the second day of teaching:both my girls showed up and had a blast learning their numbers, animals, family, writing skills, etc. Language was difficult to communicate but we made it through:) So to end out the week of teaching we ended with a pinata party and game day. wow that was amazing that the american games worked so well over the language gap!

during the week we only taught at the school for the deaf in the AM and then had the afternoons to do various things. Monday afternoon was a rest day, which we ALL needed to catch up with ourselves. Tuesday afternoon we went to local towns and visited with 2 older deaf boys. We performed the Noah's Ark skit and talked some with them. One was poor with lack of social skills. He's well known to get drunk and not care. We hope we made some kind of impact on him. One of his friends came around who was drunk and that was annoying...oh well! The other deaf boy was one who helped set up the school for the deaf but didn't continue his education there. He came to school the next day until the end of the week when we left. Its nice to know we reached out to someone! Wednesday afternoon we went to the town of Conchagua and searched for deaf people to get some experience with what Missionaries do. We didn't find any deaf but we did find some leads to where other deaf people could be. Thursday afternoon we shopped for the pinata party. That was interesting to go into the local markets! We stuffed the pinatas back at the hotel. They don't just put candies in but they put toys, money, and other surprises:) Friday afternoon to celebrate the end of the week we went to the beach and had an afternoon on the beach. it was my first time in the pacific water and it was AMAZING!!! so relaxing, just what i needed after a long week! haha!

March 8: We planned to go to the Isle of Meangurea (the biggest island) and visit with a deaf boy, named Moises, who lives there and works as a fisherman. He has never met any other deaf his age so we were the first group of older deaf he's met. It was so fun! The boat ride to the island was calm and pretty. I saw OPEN pacific waters:) Moises showed us his home and his village, his work area etc. we ate lunch at the hotel dock and performed Noah's Ark skit and The Prodigal Son skit for him. He enjoyed both of them! Soon it was time to say farewell! We loaded up the boat and started heading back...Understand...most boats/fisherman will come from mainland to the island and STAY overnight...the waters too rough in the afternoons...but since we Americans had to be back the same day they were willing to drive us back. We faced brutal waves...5-20 ft swells...soaked to the bone...the engine started faltering on us and we had to anchor down. we were still so far away from the port...a boat ride that was supposed to be 1 hour long took 3 hours...thats how bad it was...when we pulled up the anchor it BROKE...so now we have nothing to hold us down. Our Missionary Stan was seasick :-( poor thing... the captain got the engine working enough to get us to the bay area and in calmer waters. we got out on old steps and there was a port area behind us but btwn the port area and the steps where we were was a fence with barbed wire running on the top of it. so no way we can climb the fence...we start figuring out how to get back to the main road so Lynn, missionary's wife, could pick us up. some people inside the fence noticed we were here and they came to see whats up. they were filming us stranded on the other side of the fence and I never felt more like a fugitive at that moment...wow...they then found 2 ladders and made a makeshift crossing for us to get over the fence. Lynn picked us up inside the port and i was never so happy...I started crying at the amazing graces God gives us everyday. He showed me then and there his awesome power!!! after that we were covered in salt from the pacific...its so dense you could shake the salt off my hair and have PLENTY for dinner! We cleaned up at the hotel and then headed back to San Salvador to catch our plane the next day.

March 9...last day... :-( only got about 5 hours of sleep the night before because my body knew i was going home to USA but was sad at the same time...ahhh i don't wanna leave! we packed up and headed out to Burger king to have breakfast. then we made a quick coffee stop at the local grocery store to get coffee for family at home. :-) then drove another hr to the airport to find that our flight was delayed 1 hour which really meant 2 hrs delay in the US due to the time change...we left El Salvador around 1:55pm and arrived in Atlanta at 7:30 but had to wait 30 min for a gate to unload. We then KNEW we would miss our connecting flight at 8:09 because we still had to go through customs and security...so we went to get flights discussed about. we all (12 ppl) were put on standby for the last flight...none of us were able to get on due to 28 other ppl trying to get on that flight with standby...AHHHH. after awhile we figured out we'd be on the first flight out the next morning (march 10). So we spent the night in the Atlanta airport. I was the only one who didn't sleep. I read, walked around, talked with whoever was awake at the time, ate some ice cream...when more ppl woke up and it was about 5 we went to food court and ate breakfast. i am so exhausted at this point because i still ahven't slept. everyone else had at least a few hours of sleep to keep them going...i was a walking zombie...we all were able to get on the 7am flight with Standby PRAISE JESUS!!! we arrived in charlotte and I was never so happy to see the Charlotte skyline in my life! ahhh!!! got our stuff and loaded up the vans and headed home to GWU...we arrived back btwn 930-10ish in the AM and i emailed my professors explaining what happened and CRASHED. i slept from 10am-5:40pm then again 10:30-7:15am the next day. I was EXHAUSTED from only having 5 hours of sleep in a 52 hour timeframe...and it wasn't even a good 5 hours of sleep it was restless...so that just added on to the adventure!!!

Anyways, I'm glad we're back...SAFE AND SOUND:) and I really am amazed even more so at God's wonderful things he does for us:) ILY Jesus!!!

Life sure is busy *Smiles*

*Whistles* A lot sure has happened since the last time I posted...I'm definately staying busy as Miss Deaf NC and still being a college student:) I doubt time will slow down any so enjoy reading about my hectic but fun life!

Last week Monday Feb 18 was my 21st birthday:) I got a cute bird for my birthday and I named her Sky. She was from my boyfriend and then my best friend included toys and food n such:) it was a good surprise:)

Tues Feb 19 I went and spoke to Crest High School about My experience and allowed them to ask questions...here is the newspaper article about that event:

From the newsroom of The Star, Shelby, North Carolina, Tuesday, February 19, 2008 ..... Miss Deaf N.C. speaks to Crest High Students by Cherish Wilson SHELBY — Many take day-to-day communication for granted. For those without the ability to hear, it's vital. Gardner-Webb student Carole Ed wards was recently voted Miss Deaf N.C., and as part of her duties, she has been speaking to area schools. For some students, Edwards is their first exposure to deafness and American Sign Language. Presenting to students at Crest High School Tuesday, Edwards opened the floor for questions. And there were plenty of them. Everyday activities were at the top of the list. Q: How does she know if someone is knocking on the door? A: Her doorbell is connected to her lights. They flash when someone is at the door. Q: How does she wake up in the morning? A: She has an alarm clock that goes under her pillow and vibrates when it's time to get up. Q: Does she have a driver's license? A: Yes, since she was 16. Edwards said that she answers each question as if it were the most normal thing in the world to ask. “It's important for people to see that we're the same, really,” Edwards said. “At the end of a presentation I want them to know more about what it means to be deaf and the way things are done.” Recently, she spoke to second-graders at Township Three Elementary. “They asked some great questions,” she said. “One asked, 'Have you ever been to Myrtle Beach?'” For her, getting out and presenting to groups is one of the most exciting aspects of being Miss Deaf N.C.

Things after that was crazy trying to get ready for the Deaf Expo in Greensboro. It was a fun event and I met soooo many new people. I met the former and current Miss Deaf Virginia and then I met so many people that support me and all that I will be doing as Miss Deaf North Carolina. Please continue to pray for support and that money will be raised in time for the Summer Pageant in New Orleans!

I went home after the expo and spent time with my family and Brett before my missions trip upcoming. Mom accidently messed up her knee and so we helped take care of her and then celebrated my birthday as a family:) I miss being around my family all the time but I'm glad that they are who they are because without them I wouldn't be where I am today. Thanks Mom, Dad, Meredith, and Patrick (and the extended family ofc!). I love how my family totally accepts Brett as we've been dating for 2 1/2 years and I know they have accepted my Identity as Deaf now that I've chosen that Identity for myself.

This weekend I leave for El Salvador, a Deaf missions trip with my school. I'm very excited but I know it will be a long and trying week for me next week. I hope to impact many of the deaf kids there and that they will allow my team and I to help them out as they learn about Jesus and more about their language. Thats right, we're going to help them learn signs related to their culture:) I'm excited about that because it will be a totally new learning experience for me:)

I love you all! Please pray for safe travels and that everyone is touched in one way or another. Pray that God will keep us safe from evil, sickness and harm. I look forward to updating ya'll upon my return to the States March 9th. God Bless \m/ (ily)

CPCC Central Campus Valentine's Gala

Hey Everyone and Happy *belated* Valentines! As you all know from previous Post I went to CPCC for a Valentines Gala! It was held at Central campus in Downtown Charlotte and I just LOVE Charlotte city lights:) I did get lost on the way there but I made it out alright:) It was a blast as I met so many new Deaf people and saw old friends. Speaking of old friends I ran into a girl who I had known from elementary school and I hadn't seen or heard from her in 10 years. She is now pursuing an interpreter degree at CPCC and is in their ITC program. I was so in shock when she approached me! WOW! God never ceases to amaze me! We had a wonderful time as we picked a Valentines King and Queen and then ate and mingled with one another. After eating we resumed the program as I came to the stage to perform my Miss Deaf NC talent from the pageant and then they made announcement about fundraising for our trip to New Orleans in the summer for the pagent then. THEN Senette surprised me with a Birthday announcement! The whole audience sang happy birthday to me and she gave me a present! Its a beautiful container to put my favorite perfume in! So then I got to start the drawing for the Door Prizes! I love being a part of all the fun! :-)

Anyways as I close I hope to see you all this upcoming weekend at the Deaf Expo in Greensboro! See you there! :-)

My First Miss Deaf NC Event!

So this past week even though I was busy with Deaf Awareness Week I was able to go to one school around here and visit with a deaf girl there. The school was School #3 and the girl I spoke with was Phyllis. Her entire class was so glad I was there! They were the most well behaved class and they knew the role of an interpreter so they were able to talk to me while my interpreter was able to voice for me. that is so cool! Phyllis was shy but she's definately a sweet sweet girl! I spoke about my life and how I was raised oral but then learned ASL when I came to college. They loved asking me questions and the HOT question of the Day was Myrtle Beach and who has been. They apparently love Myrtle Beach! Here's clips from my time there!

DAW Pictures 2008

These are pictures from Bible Study and Kates Skate Night...when I get pictures from the Ice Cream Social and Deaf Performance Night I will post them! Enjoy~

Deaf Awareness Week!!!

Hey Everyone:)

Hope you're doing well! I just finished up a majority of GWU Deaf Awareness Week! It was super busy and our LAST event is tonight:) I wanted to catch up on old news so that I can tell you new news:)

Monday Feb 11 we had Bible study! it was a blast even though our speaker couldn't come because he was sick. Kevin Clark was supposed to run it for us but thats okay we know he'll come again! I'll post pictures in a separate blog for all to see what happened during DAW.

Tuesday Feb 12 we had Silent Movie night. that was awesome as we had a huge turnout and everyone enjoyed the movie! Some people had never used captions/subtitles with movies before but others have and that was awesome to expose people to the deaf way of watching movies.

Wednesday Feb 13 we had Skate Night at Kate's Skating rink in Shelby. They had private party selection for us. We're sad that NCSD couldn't join us this year as there was conflict on campus. It was a small group but those who showed up had fun:)

Thursday Feb 14-*VALENTINES DAY* I got sick very bad this day. Most of the day was spent in bed with a high fever. My duties as President were put aside and my wonderful VP, Secretary, and Treasurer did a wonderful job taking over for me:) They had ice cream social/game night! as they were telling me about it I was laughing and crying it was so funny. "The Wrapping paper game"- Bob Moore and Renee Warren were the lovely models. the 2 teams had to wrap their person and see who was the best wrapped present! Bob Moore won! Then they played variety of other games such as "Make your own Lemonade"- take a lemon, sugar and water and make lemonade in your mouth without making facial expressions! "Dig for M&Ms"- two teams raced to find 2 M&M's per person using their mouth only from a pie of whipped cream. "Eat a Banana through a Hose"- people had to put a hose on their face and eat a banana through that without making a hole in the Hose and biting on the banana through the hose! haha that sounded so funny I wish I could have seen!

Friday Feb 15- Deaf Performance Night!!! That was a huge Success and thanks to all who came out! We did a variety of Deaf Jokes, Skits, signed songs, etc. At the end we had our famous Fashion Show! Our new King and Queen of this year is Sumo Wrestler Kanishiki (aka Renee Warren) and Parrish Walsburger in her next life (aka Bob Moore)! It was a huge hit:) Thanks to all who made it possible!

Saturday Feb 16-Mall Awareness Day and Silent Dinner- By the end of the week we're all getting tired and definately ready to have some rest time. However this was a fun event as we were able to sit at the mall and answer questions anyone had and then go enjoy wonderful food at applebees. I was sad to miss Silent Dinner as I had a Miss Deaf NC event at Charlotte CPCC Valentine's Gala! It was great event and I'm glad I got to be a part of it!

Sunday Feb 17-Joyful Hands Performance...Joyful hands will lead the show tonight at Flint Hill Baptist Church from 6-7 and that will end our DAW for 2008! Hope to see more of you next year!!!

Life of a college student

So as most of you know I'm a college student and life sure is crazy sometimes! This past week was extremely busy and stressful as my best friend her boyfriend was put in the hospital for emergency appendicitis surgery and has been in there all week. Me, my boyfriend Brett, my best friend Deborah, and my roommate (and chaperone from the pageant) sarah all made a trip up there today to visit him again. He's going to be released hopefully sometime tomorrow! Thats great news!

Aside to friends life on campus is busy even if Im only taking 15.5 credit hours. I'm also the President of Deaf Club and we're busy planning for Deaf Awareness Week. Every year we hold one week to educate the campus/community about Deaf. The 2nd to last night of the week we hold Deaf Performance Night. Its going to be a lot of fun as last year the performance was close to 3 hours!!! Deaf Awareness week will be Feb 11-16th this year and if you would like to come to support us, feel free to contact me for the schedule! I would love to see others from the community come!

Check back later for more details about my appearances! I will let you know as I find out!
As for now, I will be appearing at the CPCC Valentines Gala Feb. 16 and I will be at the Deaf Expo in Greensboro, NC on Feb 23. I hope to see you all there! :-)

My first few weeks as Miss Deaf NC

Hey Everyone!

Welcome to my blog! I hope this is an opportunity for you to read and keep up with me as I take on this journey of being Miss Deaf North Carolina! How I got here you may wonder...here's my story!

Back last semester (I'm a Junior at Gardner-Webb University), I was waiting for my videophone to be set up. Jerry Jenkins came at last to set up the VP and when he tested it, he called his wife. She saw me and later asked Jerry about me. Senette, Jerry's wife, is the Pageant Director. She contacted Lynn Dey who is also a teacher here at GWU and asked her to ask me if I would like to be in the pageant! I've never before been in a pageant and I was thrilled for the opportunity! Its funny though because 2 days earlier I was watching an MTV show called "Made" about a tomboyish girl that wants to become prissy and win/be involved in a pageant. My roommates and I started discussing if we'd be involved in one if we were ever given the opportunity. My other roommates were like nah...I said "sure i wouldn't mind because it would be fun!" Never on earth did I think I'd actually be given that opportunity so soon!

Months before the pageant I shopped, worked on talent and platform and at last we arrived at pageant weekend! We were to arrive 2 days earlier so we can rehearse and get to know each other. There were 2 other girls as contestants (Elizabeth Sterling, and Shamica Calwell). They were sweet girls and I absolutely had a blast with them as we prepared for the pageant.

As the night of the pageant arrived, i was even more nervous. I had butterflies in my stomach and didn't want to eat much! That afternoon prior to departing for Lenior-Rhyne College (where the pageant was held) we had private interview with the Judges. I was so nervous but I did well. We left for LRC and prepared for our opening act and relaxed until the curtain opened! I was shaking the whole time (but others told me you couldn't tell) *WHEW* lol. I was so nervous until about 1/2 way through my platform speech "Building the bridge between Deaf and Hearing worlds". After that I felt fine. I loved every minute of the pageant!

When it came time to do our final walk and let the judges votes come in I felt confident for having participated in this amazing event! Senette came out to talk about Miss Congeniality award. I was shocked to hear when my name was announced! WOW! that was amazing to know that others view me as "Miss Congeniality" too bad i didn't say anything about "World PEACE!" haha!

They announced the 2nd runner up=Shamica Calwell and then they announced 1st runner up=Elizabeth Sterling and then me as the winner! WHAT?! I'm the winner!? wow I was in shock. I didn't think I'd cry if I won but I did...its amazing how far I've come!

After the pageant there were TONS of pictures and family/friends congratulating me. I was starving by this time and wanted to EAT! haha my nerves died and i'm hungry~ We go back to the hotel for pagent reception and hang out til close to midnight. finally my family and my boyfriends family and a few of my close friends went out to Waffle house for a late night run! I gotta love it when I'm with those I care the most about because it's just amazing!

As the excitement died down I realized I was exhausted...little sleep and lots to do with not a lot of caffeine really wears you down! The next morning I met with the families again and had breakfast before departing to head back to school. Soon after I arrived back people were stopping me and saying congrats and scheduling me for newspaper interviews. MADNESS! haha. I interviewed for the Shelby Star and the GWU newspaper "The Pilot". Both articles have been published and my mom sent out newpaper press release to the local area newspapers in the Raleigh area.

I'm very excited about the upcoming journey! I've been working with Senette on my schedules and I can't wait to meet new people and inspire others. God Bless you all and I love you! will be more updates later with pictures:)

*HUGS*
